Abu Ubaida, whose real name was Hudhayfah Samir Abdullah Al-Kahlout (also known as Abu Ibrahim), was the spokesperson of Hamas’ military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, for nearly two decades. Known for his calm demeanor, clarity of speech, and strategic insight, he became a recognisable voice representing the organisation worldwide.
The Name and Legacy
After a brief period of silence following August 30, 2025, a new spokesperson appeared, also using the name Abu Ubaida. This clarified that the previous spokesperson, Hudhayfah Al-Kahlout, had passed away. For organisational reasons, the name continued to be used, preserving continuity in communication.
Early Life and Education
Hudhayfah was born on February 11, 1984, and grew up in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. He memorised the Holy Quran at a young age and attended UNRWA schools for his early education. In 2002, he enrolled at the Islamic University of Gaza and completed a master’s degree in 2013. His research focused on “The Holy Land Between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam,” reflecting his academic rigor and intellectual depth.
Career as a Spokesperson
Al-Kahlout joined the Al-Qassam Brigades formally in 2002 and was appointed spokesperson in 2004 due to his skill in writing and public speaking. He issued his first official statement in 2006, marking the start of a nearly two-decade-long tenure. Known for his calm, commanding, and persuasive voice, he often included Quranic references and concluded his statements with the phrase:
“Indeed, it is jihad—victory or martyrdom.”
He frequently appeared in military attire with a face covering, earning the nickname “Al-Mulaththam” (the masked one).
Family and Personal Life
Hudhayfah Al-Kahlout was married and fathered four children. His family background traces back to the historic city of Ashkelon, from where his family migrated to Gaza in 1948. His life reflected dedication to both family and community, as well as a commitment to his role as a spokesperson and leader.
Influence and Legacy
Hudhayfah’s voice and public statements became symbolic of resistance and leadership. Though his face remained mostly unseen, his speeches resonated widely and inspired many. His legacy continues through the principles, messages, and organisational structure he helped maintain, showing that the impact of ideas and leadership can persist beyond an individual.
May his life and contributions be remembered, and may his family find peace.
